The Gushing Cinephile: January 20, 2014

Sorry for the absence of The Gushing Cinephile lately. Truth is, there hasn’t been much to report on. Now however, I’ve got more than enough to present you with. So, without further ado, here’s the brand new edition of The Gushing Cinephile!

First look:

Gone Girl

For those who don’t know, the bestseller “Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn is well on its way to the big screen. Starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike in the lead roles, “Gone Girl” centres around a couple whose marriage is sinking, until Pike’s character goes missing on the couples anniversary. The film is directed by the illustrious David Fincher and is set for release on October 3, 2014.

The Imitation Game

A dramatic retelling of wartime cryptographer Alan Turing who cracked Nazi-Germany’s Enigma Code in World War 2. “The Imitation Game” stars Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead role and is set for release sometime in 2014.

The upcoming biblical epic “Exodus” directed by Ridley Scott and starring Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, and Ben Kingsley gives us a brief look both on and behind the scenes. The film is set for release December 12, 2014.

This is the most important bit of news, at least for me anyway, in this edition of The Gushing Cinephile. “Frank” stars Michael Fassbender and Domhnall Gleeson, it just had its premiere at Sundance. This is one of my most anticipated films of 2014. Below, you’ll find the first ever footage from the film to be released. Check out the clip!

I Origins

Having its premiere at Sundance mere days ago, “I Origins,” which reunites the lovely Brit Marling and Mike Cahill, unleashed a stunning poster. The film’s release date is unknown as of the moment. Marling and Cahill worked together previously on “Another Earth.” Also hearing that Fox Searchlight has picked up “I Origins” for distribution.

Home Video:

Two of my favourites films of 2013 will be hitting home video in the coming months. First, Alfonso Cuaron’s “Gravity,” which is having no trouble at all so far this award season, will make its way to video players everywhere February 25, 2014. See artwork below.

The Fifth Estate

Another film I really admire from 2013, “The Fifth Estate” will be released on all platforms January 28, 2014.

Release Dates:

Denis Villeneuve’s “Enemy” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Melanie Laurent, and Sarah Gadon will be hitting theatres March 14, 2014.

Under the Skin

Jonathan Glazer’s mysterious thriller “Under the Skin” starring Scarlett Johansson will be coming to a theatre near you April 4, 2014. You can check out our review of the film by clicking here.

Tom Hardy led thriller “Locke” will hit the silver screen April 25, 2014 after a brief appearance at Sundance.

The Green Inferno

Eli Roth’s homage to the cannibal genre “The Green Inferno” will be making you cringe September 4, 2014. Check out our review here.

Untitled Batman/Superman Film

Zack Snyder’s follow-up to “Man of Steel” starring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavil has been pushed back to May 6, 2016.

Wally Pfsiter’s highly-anticipated directorial debut “Transcendence” has been anything but secretive. Showing a slew of pictures starring the film’s cast Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara, and Cillian Murphy, in addition to three teaser trailers and a brief plot synopsis. Well, now you can catch the film’s first official trailer.

You all know me, I’m a horror fanatic! So, I felt compelled to share with you the first official trailer for Eli Roth-produced “Clown.” Sadly, it has been removed briefly, but I’m sure if you look hard enough, you’ll find it.

  1. Good stuff!

  2. Some good stuff here Joseph. Gone Girl sounds great and I’m really looking foward to Under The Skin as it’s filmed in my home city. It’ll be very interesting for me.

  3. Sounds exciting.

  4. Lots of good stuff on here buddy. Frank intrigues me, especially as the character of Frank Sidebottom, on whom Frank is based, is such a cult comedy figure in the UK. How this has got made is incredible! As for Gravity, I do seriously wonder how much impact will be lost on the small(er) screen.

    • I know, not a lot of people know about the origins of Frank. Did you see the film Filth? Frank was also present in that one for a bit. Regardless love Gleeson and Fassbender, so really excited to see it!

Gravity will undoubtedly lose some of its muster, but hopefully not to a disastrous extent.

  5. Good bit of news! 2014 has potential to be a really strong movie year!

  6. I just don’t know what to make of Frank from that trailer. It just looks bizarre, but it’s got me intrigued! It’s so weird that this film has even been made!

  7. I still don’t know what possible reason can there be to cover Fassbender’s face. This is a waste :) I’m so happy for Rosamund Pike finally landing a lead role in Gone Girl.

    • I know, I know, he’s a good looking cat. So is Tom Hardy and Bane still worked out well. Hopefully Fassbender can bring his limitless talents to the role and knock another one out of the park. Really happy for Pike as well. Have you read Gone Girl? Just picked it up, going to start it soon.

      • I haven’t read it but I plan on it soon, I heard the film is going to have entirely different 3rd act which is worrying, I read that the ending to the book is very good.

      • Same here, I don’t think Fincher would take on a terrible script, it must be faithful to the novel with a dash of something new. Guess only time will tell :).

  8. Great edition. Can’t wait for Gone Girl and Transcendence, despite my Johnny Depp aversion as of late.

Exodus and I Origins seem very interesting and I quite liked the trailer for Frank. Looks intriguing and I’m a huge fan of Domnhall Gleeson.

I’ll definitely be getting Gravity on Blu-Ray, that’s a must-have. And maybe I’ll finally watch The Fifth Estate soon.

Enemy and Under the Skin are two 2014 releases I’m looking forward and I’m actually glad they pushed Batman vs Superman back. They’ll have more time to get it right.

    • Thanks Fernando! Just picked up Gone Girl, going to give it a read. I’m not a huge Depp fan, he just hasn’t done much to keep me pleased I guess. I know he has the chops, hopefully he can pull Transcendence off.

Exodus and I Origins have the talent and track record, so I’m not too worried. Love Gleeson as well, and think you should know that under the head, Fassbender is playing Frank.

Definitely be picking up Gravity, maybe The Fifth Estate, if only for the performances.

Under the Skin is great, I’m sure you’ll love it. I also can’t wait for Enemy.

If they need more time, I can wait, impatiently albeit. As long as it’s done right.

      • I also want to read Gone Girl before the movie!

I hope Depp can pull Transcendence off as well. Judging from the trailer, it looks like he wil.

Yes, I know that’s Fassbender. Looking forward to his performance, although why someone would want to cover that face is beyond me! haha

      • Just wanted to let you know, in case you didn’t. Fassbender will be fine, look at Hardy as Bane!

He better pull of Transcendence, not even for me, but for Pfister! That guy deserves a solid start behind the camera,

      • Well, that’s true :)

And yes, very curious about his debut. Hope it’s a great one and that he’ll make a name for himself as a director.

  9. I really don’t know if I want to read Gone Girl before I watch this film (I truly HATED Sharp Objects, completely spoiled all her stuff and I don’t find Flynn to be a particularly engaging writer).

Hmmm, Exodus is boasting a decent cast, it might be well worth the watch…

Excellent little Gushing Cinephile to come back with! :D

  10. Epic work! Gonna be a good year. Great post. Thanks! ;)

  11. Gone Girl and Frank look pretty cool. as much as I loved Gravity. Not sure it could compete seeing it at home

  12. I have nominated you for the Sunshine Blog Award.
