The Gushing Cinephile: November 25, 2013

323982-xbox-one-vs-playstation-4-upcoming-consoles-compared

I’d like to start off this edition of The Gushing Cinephile with a non-film related topic. As most of you know, the next-gen console war officially got underway with the releases of Playstation 4 and Xbox One this month. Personally, I stood in line this past Thursday evening for quite some time to ensure that I obtained my next-gen gaming system, the Xbox One…which I’m loving to death by the way! That being said, I’m rather curious as to what you, my fellow bloggers and readers, think of the newest consoles, their capabilities, and video-gaming in general. This affects movie lovers as well, considering that you can watch Netflix and rent or buy movies on them, in addition to utilizing the consoles as Bluray/DVD players. So please respond to the poll below and drop a comment regarding anything to do with gaming.

POSTER:

First up, a badass poster from one of the best films 2013 has to offer, “Big Bad Wolves.” You can check out our review of the flick by clicking here and the poster below!

Homage to giallo “Berberian Sound Studio” will be hitting home video December 10, 2013.

One of my favourites from TIFF 2012, “Sightseers” will finally be coming to Bluray in North America on December 10, 2013. You can check out our review here!

What I’m sure will be nominated in the foreign Oscar category, “The Hunt” starring Mads Mikkelsen will be invading your personal lives on December 10, 2013. Check out our review here!

TRAILERS:

With a star-studded cast and disturbing content, “Devil’s Knot” has got my attention…

The latest release from Joe Swanberg (Drinking Buddies) unveiled a trailer this past week? The film is entitled “All the Light In the Sky” and has got its hooks in me.

Darren Aronofsky’s biblical epic “Noah” unleashed its first trailer. Maybe it’s just me, but I was a little let down. Don’t get me wrong though, still looking forward to it!

Now we’re talking! Lars Von Trier’s sex addiction epic “Nymphomaniac” finally released a full-length trailer. Be aware, it is a red-band trailer containing graphic nudity, so people 18 and over only!

James Franco and Jessica Chastain! Count me in! This is the trailer for “Tar!”

I think that I’ve finally decided that I’d travel to see Jason Clarke in a film. “Swerve” is his newest outing and I can’t wait to catch it!

It may be short, it may not contain a lot of actual content, but this teaser for “Sherlock: Season 3″ has done its job.

That’ll do it for this week’s edition of The Gushing Cinephile. I hope you enjoyed it!

  1. Can’t wait for Big Bad Wolf!!

  2. I’m really looking forward to the third season of Sherlock. Been waiting for that since 2012.

  3. I haven’t decided which console to get. I’ll probably wait until next year after more games come out. :)

For fear of spoilers I have watched the Sherlock Series 3 teaser yet but I’m looking forward to finding out how he survives last episode’s cliffhanger.

  4. You X-Box people. Locking your games and what what :P But no, I am not going for either, though my other half was eyeing the PS4 until he saw who manufactured the hardware. He is a bit more cautious now.

Still want to see that Big Bad Wolves! Really digging the poster!

Got my hands on The Hunt. Really want to check Mads out in this one, people are giving him glowing reviews on it!

  5. PS4 for me! No idea when it’ll arrive but hopefully before Xmas.

Berberian Sound Studio, The Hunt and Sightseers are all very good indeed, although BSS was absolutely mental and fell apart a bit in the last third for me.

  6. Underwhelmed by the Noah trailer, don’t think I’ll be going out of my way to see it. And it was the Xbox One for me too, it’s rather spiffy!

    • I still really want to see Noah, I’m just a little more cautious. We should play Xbox One together! What games do you play?

      • All I have so far is Ryse: Son of Rome, of which I’ve only had time to play a little, but it looks amazing. My bro got a couple of games too, so I might pilfer those at the weekend. :D

      • How are you liking the system and the little bit of game time you’ve gotten in thus far? I take it you don’t play Battlefield or COD? ;).

      • I’m really digging the system, it’s as smooth as a baby’s bum, and I love the voice features. Though I think it struggled with my accent at first.

Don’t play COD or Battlefield, my FPS skills leave a lot to be desired. ;) Strangely enough though, I enjoy watching them!

      • Lol, FPS is pretty much all I play. Not a big fan of open world games. I gotta tell ya, it’s nice to see a girl who enjoys gaming. It’s a tough female crowd around here ;).

      • The ladies around these parts are indeed awesome. Represent!

Did I use that right? Just like COD, street-speak is not my forte. ;P

      • Like you, street-slang is not in my wheelhouse, but it sounds like you used it correctly. It appears as if the girls around your neck of the woods are much cooler ;).

  7. I have not jumped on either system at this time. I’m primarily a Japanese RPG fan and those games are never available at launch anyway. I’m still waiting on Final Fantasy XV and Persona 5 (just announced), both of which are on PS3, so I don’t feel much need to rush.

I’ve been pretty disappointed by the previous generation of games in general though because the RPGs in general were pretty weak and few and far between. Pretty much we had a nice start with Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey, and Blue Dragon (plus a few lesser titles) then a long wait and Final Fantasy XIII and Magna Carta 2 were released around the same time, then some time later Xenoblade finally came out on Wii and then Ni no Kuni last year.

I haven’t seen much to suggest that any of these sorts of games will be out anytime soon on PS4/XboxOne. They teased Ni no Kuni for a good 4 years before the release. Final Fantasy XV was teased a good five years ago now and still isn’t released.

My brother seems to be enjoying his PS4 though, despite being a XBOX gamer primarily in the previous generation. All of his friends from XBOX 360 have joined him to play COD and MW4 on PS4.

  8. The PC is the best console for the true gamer. Fact. It’s unfortunate however that great games like GTAV don’t have a PC version.
