The Gushing Cinephile: June 10, 2013

Another week of The Gushing Cinephile and I am starting to really enjoy this segment. Have I got a few little tidbits of exciting news for you!

Let’s start off with what I feel to be the most important development of the week. Apparently, acclaimed filmmaker Takashi Miike, director of cult favourites such as “Ichi the Killer,” “Audition,” and “13 Assassins” is set to make his hollywood debut. After directing in excess of 50 Japanese films, Miike’s first english-language film will be entitled “The Outsider” and will star none other than the illustrious Tom Hardy. The film is supposedly set in post-World-War II Japan and follows a former american soldier who has now become involved with the Yakuza. Other than this information, very is little known about the upcoming film. Production is scheduled to begin early in 2014.

Moving on, “X-Men: Days of Future Past” director Bryan Singer tweeted this epic photo of Michael Fassbender as Magneto from the set of the film.

Up next, we have two new images from ”The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.” Before I get into that, be sure to keep your eyes peeled on Tuesday as the first trailer from the film is supposedly going to drop.

First is a look at Evangeline Lilly as elf-warriror Tauriel.

Second, a poster for the film released a couple of days ago.

Now, onto more upsetting news, well, at least for me anyway. As you know, I am an avid fan of the television show “Shameless” and if you follow the show like me, you know that Justin Chatwin’s character Steve/Jimmy’s fate was left open-ended after last season’s finale. It recently broke that Chatwin would not be returning to the show, seemingly ending his relationship with Fiona, played by the radiant Emmy Rossum. Hopefully, somewhere down the line, Steve/Jimmy can return.

FInally, a couple of new trailers were released this past week. The first is for James Wan’s highly anticipated “Insidious: Chapter 2″ and the second is the new trailer for “Filth” starring James McAvoy.

Insidious: Chapter 2.

Okay guys, that’ll do it for The Gushing Cinephile this week. Remember that Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack for “Man of Steel” drops Tuesday. Also, let me know what you guys think about this week’s edition. Any bit of news you’re particularly looking forward to? Let me know! Everyone have a great week!

  1. I like these posts : )

WOW – this Insidious actually looks good (I didn’t much care for the first one)

    • Thanks so much! :) .

I know, right? I really enjoyed the first “Insidious” and I have the utmost respect for James Wan, but I did expect “Insidious 2″ to tail off. However, this doesn’t appear to be the case, the trailer looks great. I also can’t wait for his next film “The Conjuring,” looks really good also.

      • The Conjuring does look really good!

      • High expectations for “The Conjuring” since it landed an R-rating; the explanation given was that the content was simply too scary to be PG-13 and that excites me considering The Ring – Insidious – and The Last Exorcism were all PG-13.

      • Finally we agree on something ;) . Really looking forward to “The Conjuring.” If the trailer is any indication, should be a good fright fest!

  2. Finally will be able to get that Hans Zimmer “Man of Steel” album; been waiting a while!

    • I know, ever since I heard it in the background of the trailers, I’ve been dying to get my hands on it.

      • “The Dark Knight” is my favorite score of all-time! The whole Batman trilogy was great. He also did that lame movie “Broken Arrow” in 1996, but the score was awesome! A lot of movie trailers borrowed it shortly after that movie. “Scream 2″ even used it as part of the score for their movie. lol. Also, “The Rock” and of course “Gladiator” was great, as well.

      • Everything Zimmer touches seems to turn into gold. I can’t think of a single score he composed that was sub-par. Really looking forward to the Man of Steel soundtrack.

  3. That Miike film sounds good and Tom Hardy seems like the perfect star for it. I also agree with you all about Zimmer. He’s such a great composer and his work, especially in the Dark Knight trilogy and Inception, enhances the film immensely.

  4. I will be utterly intrigued to see Miike’s first hollywood film. I wonder how much of a free-reign he will be given by those financing the film?

    • I completely agree, considering what makes Miike so revered and effective is his ability to push the boundaries. Regardless, I am really looking forward to seeing what Miike and Hardy are able to accomplish by each others side.

  5. Cool news! Not interested at all in The Hobbit, but looking forward to The Outsider. Love Tom Hardy.
