The Gushing Cinephile: May 20, 2013
Well now, I hope you all had a terrific weekend and for those in Canada, like me, enjoy the extra day off. It is time for the second edition of The Gushing Cinephile and I think I’ve compiled a few treats that all of you should really enjoy. Let’s jump right in!
First up, a few new trailers released this past week. The first is for James Franco’s As I Lay Dying. I had no knowledge of this films existence until I saw the trailer. This Franco directed adaptation of William Faulkner’s timeless novel has got my attention to say the least. I’m not really sure what to expect, but I’m looking forward to seeing how Franco and company handle this delicate piece of literature.
Second, the red-band trailer for V/H/S 2. The teaser trailer had me shaking and cringing, but this new look at the follow up to V/H/S has me hiding under the sheets. It is fair to say that I am eagerly awaiting its release.
Lastly, the official trailer for Europa Report. I am really into science-fiction films that have to do directly with space, physics, and reality. It may not entirely deal within these facets, but the trailer looks fantastic, can’t wait to see it.
Next up, there was a couple of finales this week and they really got to me. Saturday Night Live said goodbye to long time “Weekend Update” host Seth Myers and more than likely Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, and Jason Sudeikis. They aren’t leaving at the best time I’d say. The show, without doubt, had a tough year compared to its previous seasons. Now, with the departures of four, popular regulars, SNL really has its work cut out for it. It’ll be interesting to see who they bring in to replace the four comedic geniuses and how they plan on upping their game next season. What do you guys think will happen with SNL?
Sadly, we had to say goodbye to The Office this past week. However, it was a bittersweet moment as there were a few surprises and laughs to accompany the occasional tears. What did you think of The Office’s final sendoff?
In more, positive news, Christopher Nolan is reportedly in talk to direct Bond 24 and I am perfectly fine with that. While the odds of it actually happening are slim right now, there is no problem with dreaming is there?
We’ve got some new pictures from a couple of highly anticipated releases. The first pic is from Lars Von Trier’s Nymphomaniac.
Finally, the first official picture from Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups set for release later in 2013.
Lastly guys, I found this terrific article on Terrence Malick this past week. If you are a fan of him and his work, you should definitely check this one out, it is an outstanding read. I’ll post the link below. Also, don’t forget to check out this past week’s top 19 which featured films that are the most difficult to watch. Have a great week!

The last two years of the office have really kind of sucked but the finale was perfect! A little melodramatic toward the end of the show but it went out just right.
Taran Killan (SP??) is starting to grow on me but I don’t know if any of the cast have the ability to “lead” SNL right now. Quite frankly I’ve been done with Sudeikis and Armison for a awhile now but Hader leaving has me sad.. I like Nasim but she’s just now in it that much… I don’t know how the future looks…
One more alphabetic letter ahah, Killam. But yeah, you’re right, he has really grown on me as well. I’m not too sure on who can lead the cast, but they’ve always found a way to make it work before, so I have faith.
The Office was very heart-breaking, yet fulfilling. I’m glad it felt a lot like closure so we won’t always be guessing as to what happened with the cast.
I’ll definitely keep on watching – I’ve been doing it for around 30 years LOL : )
Cool to see a (mostly) positive look at things happening and coming in the world of entertainment since so much speculation/preview stuff comes with a skeptical edge. Definitely looking forward to Nymphomaniac since von Trier is on an incredible run of late.
Thanks! I’ve been growing weary of the constant negative outlooks on every single piece of Cinema yet to be released. It’s fun to sit back and anticipate with an easy-going edge. No doubt! Von Trier has been on absolute tear lately. Really looking forward to Nymphomaniac. Thanks for stopping by, look forward to conversing with you .
